Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
We did it; we spent our first night away from the boy. It was desperately needed. I'm so burnt out that lately I look at him sometimes and it just feels like he's an annoying pet that I wish I could shut outside. Yes, yes, Mummy Hell, blah blah. I needed to get away. M has had weeks without him when we've been away, but I've never had a single night off. Add to that eight months of "morning" sickness... my time had come.

Dad came down Saturday morning and fixed the alternator on the car. Woo! He has been awesome lately. We've come a long way in nearly two years. It's his sixtieth birthday tomorrow. Scary. Once the car was fixed, we dropped the boy at Roger and Jodie's, settled him in and headed off.

We went down to Hamilton, for a school-friend of mine's (H) flatwarming. From quiet Catholic school-girl to polyamorous international jet-setter in ten short years :P We checked into the motel (which I recommend, by the way-- nice facilities and the best showers ever) then wandered down. We took Munchkin and Balderdash, and ended up going back to the motel to pick up Settlers.

I met lots of nice people ([info]alasatyr and [info]debxena-- always nice to meet friends of friends by overhearing "Livejournal" and then going "hmm, I know that username... who are you friends with?", as well as [info]invisiblemoose and [info]aj_dot_com) and had a great time. Just like old times, but with new people! Balderdash was terrific fun, such a great bunch of people. H catered from Not Your Mother's Cookbook, so we got to try blue cheese cheesecake and chocolate chilli with cornflake meatballs. You know you're at a geek party when there's multiple versions of Munchkin, and you have a group gathered around the computer suggesting youtube searches, which lead us to the either profound or profoundly weird sockbaby. Later entertainment included eye toy games. When we were down to the last four people (shush, we were making the most of our freedom!) there was Singstar. I thought it was fun, but I was pretty tiddled tired by then!

Stumbled back to the motel around 2am, where the Coke portion of the Bacardi and Cokes caught up with me and I lay awake for most of the night. *eyeroll* The customary McD's for breakfast, along with the customary McD's being incompetent and continually giving our ordered BLT bagel away to other people, and we delivered the required dose of salt and fat to H's house for hangover cure. Drove out of Hamilton for half an hour, then back in to pick up my bag which I'd left at H's, and then back out...

X cried for a couple of hours in the middle of the night. He was very very glad to see us and has been basically attached at the boob hip ever since. I left him in bed with M while I ducked out to the loo, and he started to cry "Mummy gone, Mummy gone", so I'm thinking it's not something we'll do again soon. He'd probably be much happier if someone stayed with him here rather than him at their house, but we're in no rush. Just knowing that the option exists makes a big difference. I feel... revitalised, despite the tiredness. I've not been a proactive or patient parent lately; my tank has been too empty. Bacardi A break has filled it again. I had a great time.

I'm glad you got a break. I'm kinda shocked that it was your first time away. I thought you might have had a chance to stay over somewhere leaving him home with M. I thought wrong.

I try not to be all bad, and she keep telling me I do so much for her, which I think is a pile of crap, but what can I do. I guess hopefull now she can get more confident about going away, maybe she will take time off. I thinkshe can safely book a week or whatever it is for the music camp next jan;)

As for your visit, July (or whenever!) sounds awesome:) We may need to sort out some better sleeping arrangements by then;)

I just don't want it to be a pain for you guys if you're both working, although we don't *need* entertaining. Last time we came Jex was a SAHM :) Also, we could park in your driveway. Now you have a car and you both have jobs, can't you think about *us* for a change :P

Talking of jobs... how is your new one going??? Or hasn't it started yet? I'm forgetful.

Oddly enough, I first heard of [info]debxena through a friend in New York, but she seems to have my sister on her friends list. Almost as bad as the time I got talking to a musician in the UK through another guy I know over there, and then found out that he was "that Amon" - he was a friend of a guy who used to board with us, and whose wedding we're bothing going to later this year here in Christchurch.

Geeks + Interweb == v. v. small world :-)

My sister is [info]atropus. The friend in New York being [info]murnkay.

(I also notice about half a dozen assorted Aucklanders and NZ Goths in common, and a rather nifty Karen over in Japan.)

[info]murnkay I know through another New York-based LJ user [info]rosefox with whom I used to share a couple of newsgroups.

It's a large world, but folded.

[info]rosefox is also nifty, from what I've seen of her :-)

Whoa, first time out sans kid? Good for you, you definitely made the most of it. It was cool meeting you and your husband.

H had a full evening of Not Your Mother's Cookbook food. A report of the night including pictures (and an extrapolation of the letter 'H'!) can be found here.

Sockbaby is the greatest and best thing that modern civilization has to offer. Right after Batman. It's one of those things that only a few of you watch, and then get to shout quotes at each other in social gatherings while others look perplexed.

It'd be great to see more of you some time. Do the pair of you find yourselves in Hamilton often?

Oh and finally, feel free to just call me Scott if you'd rather. :)

We had an awesome time. H invited us to that party, but at that stage we had no car and were both unemployed :P

My little brother is Scott, and I tend to stick with LJ names if possible :)

Great to meet you, hon! We tried to book at the Aspen but were too slow ... ended up at the lovely Colonial City Motel in Thackeray Street instead.

I find it happening at more and more parties these days. The really fun part is when you finally end up saying, "Okay, look. Does anyone here NOT have a livejournal?" and you get maybe one person sheepishly raising a hand... Hah! Feel the geekpeerpressure!

Is that the H I met last year when I was in Auckland? If so, she's lovely. Glad you had a good time, but also sad that X missed you so badly. *hugses*
